About

Born of Hope is a 60 minute, extremely high quality, Lord of the Rings inspired film being produced in the UK .  Although a low budget production where the entire cast and crew are giving their services for no financial gain, the subject matter and the quality has attracted people from around the world to join the team.   It has even gained support and interest from some of the original New Line Trilogy cast and crew members including Richard Taylor and the team at Weta Workshop, New Zealand.  The trailer and video featurettes from the test shoot in April 2006 have been well received at many conventions and exhibitions around the world and we have a large following anxiously awaiting the release of the finished film.

Born of Hope is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings and is inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings in the Appendices of the Trilogy. The Dúnedain have always captured my interest and a story about these rangers of the North really appealed.  Unlike most 'fan made films' Born of Hope is not a spoof or parody, but a serious drama with many aspects of Tolkien’s work and Peter Jackson’s New Line films represented: love, war, family, friendship, good and evil.

This project was originally conceived because around October 2003 I heard about a Tolkien Fan Film Exhibition, which was to be held at Tolcon, a convention in Seattle USA in May 2004.   However, from a small spark the idea grew into a hugely ambitious project and would never have been completed to the standard I wanted, for the 2004 Exhibition.   Over 4 years later and this project has grown into something I could never have imagined and despite the ups and downs it is proving an amazing experience.

In April 2006 we completed a test shoot, filming a collection of scenes and action clips to create various promotional material including a teasers trailer and video featurettes.  The full story has now been developed and principal photography is due to take place from July and December 2008 with an estimated release in summer 2009.

Born of Hope is a non commercial production being created for free internet download for Lord of the Rings and film fans worldwide.  It is being made purely for entertainment purposes and to keep the storytelling "history" of Middle Earth, that professor Tolkien so lovingly created, growing and expanding as real stories of old would have been around the campfire.

Story

A scattered people, the remnant of storied sea-kings of the ancient West, struggle to survive in a lonely wilderness.  But a dark force relentlessly bends its will toward their destruction, eager to snuff out their noble flame forever.  Yet amidst these valiant, desperate people, a flicker of hope remains.  A royal house endures, descended from many kings, unbroken from father to son.  It is the lord of this house the Shadow seeks to destroy, sending its minions to find him—and any heir of his who might arise in hope to challenge the growing darkness.

The 41 page hour long script is inspired by only a couple of paragraphs written by Tolkien in the appendices of the Lord of the Rings.  The story is set in the time before the War of the Ring and looks at the lives of the Dúnedain, the Rangers of the North, before the return of the king and primarily focuses on the relationship between Arathorn and Gilraen, the parents of Aragorn.  We tell how Arathorn and Gilraen meet and follow their story until a two year old Aragorn goes to live in Rivendell.

Beth Aynsley as Gilraen & Christopher Dane as Arathorn, the mother and father of Aragorn (Test shoot April 2006)

Raphael Edwards as Halbaron teaching swordsmanship to his son Halbarad, played by Jacques Hanlon (Test shoot April 2006)

Locations

The look of the film is extremely important, as I want it to look as professional as possible and to get as close as we possibly can to Peter Jackson's New Line Trilogy without their budget.

West Stow's Reconstructed Anglo-Saxon Village

The first time I visited West Stow's reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village around Christmas 2003 I realised immediately that it was ideal for the Dúnedain village where most of the film is set.

Snowdonia

I live in one of the flattest areas of the UK but I am hoping to take some of the team out the Snowdonia in Wales to shoot in these impressive landscapes.
